Over 200,000
Baby Boomers are expected to retire from 2008 to 2011 "From fiscal 2008 through 2011 you may be one of federal employees expected to retire from government service. Mostly, Baby Boomers, who will be calling it quits and 8 out of 10 are extremely interested in additional information about preparing for retirement. That’s about 60,000 retirees each year. Call it a retirement tsunami. If you’re like many, you simply aren’t prepared to make an informed decision about your retirement options. You've been busy working your federal job and coping with all the changes in government, which has had it’s shape and mission radically defined and redefined over the past dozen years or so. You simply haven’t had the time to think about your exit strategy. If you even have begun to form one. You also may think your retirement date is a long way off, but consider that the age the average federal worker hangs it up is 62. How close are you? The Office of Personnel Management strongly believes that government must do better at preparing you for this key life decision and encourages you to learn as much as you can about the elements that go into making the choice, including not only federal retirement rules and regulations, which can be daunting themselves, but investment and lifestyle choices, as well. Most federal employees just aren’t getting complete information necessary to make the most of their retirement. They want their agencies to provide them with more help, the survey found. Editor’s Note: More and more agencies are centralizing personnel operations and moving retirement planning away from the office to consolidated units throughout the nation. This creates uneasiness for many retirement applicants. This is why you really need to plan your retirement early and be aware of all your benefit options."
